BitView's QnA Discord Answers
Hello BitViewers! As promised, heres an QnA answers (from Discord server and AMA video):
Q: Are there any database backups from late 2018 - 2019/2020?
A: No, we don't have them due to the kolyma buyout.
Q: Why was BitView sold? Why was it sold to kuz??
A: I cannot answer that question. I had no control over it, so it's difficult to answer.
Q: How much longer do you guys plan on running BitView?
A: It depends on the ad revenue. We don't want to add anti-adblock to the site, so it all depends on whether the site will continue to operate or not. Herotrap is doing a great job as one of the developers, and I think as long as he's here, nothing will change.
Q: Where is Jan?
A: He's taking care of his own matters, but he oversees the server and helps us code the site from time to time.
Q1: How difficult would you say it was for you to get BitView up and running, and where do you intend to take it in the future?
Q2: Where do you see BitView in a few years?
A: Regarding the first part of the question: remember that I wasn't the owner of the site. Jan has been the owner of the site from the beginning, and he has been guiding everything on the site - and continues to do so - helping us maintain the servers. I hope that in the future, BitView will have more active users than it does now, and we will be able to surpass our "older brother" VidLii.
Q: Would you say the platform has evolved - even partially - beyond the "old internet," or do you still remain faithful to the "old YouTube revival" aspect at the core of BV?
A: It's difficult to answer that question. Some things are "beyond the old internet," while others fully embrace the functioning and appearance of old YouTube. Of course, we strive to maintain at least a 1:1 functioning of the website, but unfortunately, it's not as easy as it may seem. We mainly rely on memories, old archives (Web Archive, videos from that era, or photos), and it's challenging to replicate everything exactly as it was.
Q: I know you like OSU!, but have you thought about playing any Clone Hero? If you do, what are your favorite tracks to play on there? Also, what if the next project could be a SoundCloud revival?
A: Haha, unfortunately, I don't have a guitar for Clone Hero. I played the original GH on my uncle's PlayStation console, but I don't remember much because it was about 14 years ago. As for your idea, I have no idea. Such a service (it seems to me) would be more challenging to handle than BitView. We'll see what the future holds.
Q: Despite being infamously known, why has BMF been a mod on BitView for long periods of time? (Excluding the Kolyma period, of course, those were his best times as BV staff.) Jan's petition?
A: Honestly? He was just good (in the beginning). To be honest, I was also afraid to remove him from the moderator position - you never know how capable BMF can be. I was simply afraid, and that's why he was a moderator for such a long time.
Q: How did Jan find you to develop BitView? (You did excellent, by the way!)
A: Actually, with the help of one of my friends, I got this job. As you know, I asked for access to the code as early as 2018(!), unfortunately without success. Jan didn't believe in my coding abilities - and he was right. I was also very young and foolish at that time, my English was at its worst, and it was difficult to be friends with me. But after a few years, he saw something in me, and that's how I became a developer. Thanks for the kind words :)
Q: Will there ever be merch?
A: I don't think so.
Q: What was Kolyma's BitView like?
A: It was filled with gore and various explicit content - more than what it is now.
Q: I have a question, can you send me the 2006 BitView code? Answer with a yes or no. (Evie question)
A: You know that I can't, dude :P I wasn't a developer back when the 2006 BitView existed.
Q: Once we finish evolving, are we planning on adding a theme switcher, or is the site just done?
A: Probably... it all depends on whether we will have the motivation and if we reach that point.
Q: What's the most abundant type of video on BitView?
A: If you're asking for my personal opinion, documentaries about our community (e.g., Iceberg about BitView in Spanish or Herotrap's videos explaining why SubRocks sucks) are very interesting content, and I would like to see more of them - mainly because I want to see how other people perceived the things that were happening in our community back then.
Q: Where is OldTube??
A: Nowhere to be seen.
Q: what made you want a anime character for your profile picture
A: She looks cool. Right now I have Rapi from NIKKE and I really like her, she's so cool. Much recommend.
Okay, so that would be it for our QnA session. I hope I've answered any questions you may have. See you
in future posts!
Keep expressing yourself,
